about
Originally intended for Mons La Hire's 2017 release "Warning Lights," the band decided to take a year to develop the song's themes and get it right. The lyrics were inspired by singers Suzanne and Daniel's personal journey through a mutual lifestyle change as they became disenchanted with the faith of their childhoods. The song addresses the trepidation of approaching a lover with the news that a part of one's self thought to be fundamental has changed, only to find that the partner has also been thinking about the same things.
"Between Us" is the first single from Mons La Hire's upcoming EP "Kind of Neutral, Kind of Blue," which will be released on October 26, 2018. The EP features 5 songs with 4 different lead singers -- a testament to the band's nature as a joint venture, as an indie rock collective -- while maintaining a cohesive, melancholy indie rock sound. The band is inspired by artists like Arcade Fire, Wilco, Radiohead, and the Beatles, who were able to build careers out of blending a variety of disparate influences and sounds.
lyrics
Early morning
Just you and me
Standing in a garden
Overlooking the sea
We watched the clouds pour through the trees
With your hands deep in your pockets
You turned to me, and said
“I’m just changing my direction
I don’t mean to cause a fuss
I’m just changing my direction
Please don’t let that come between us”
We descended
A stony path
Climbed bony driftwood fences
Crossed inlets still as glass
“Between the devil and the deep blue sea
I was terrified to tell you
And now I have to laugh, because..
I’m just changing my direction
I don’t mean to cause a fuss
I’m just changing my direction
I’d never let that come between us”

The collaborative EP from two Seattle bands is an unexpected delight of dancey guitar rock with an appealingly tossed off vibe. Bandcamp New & Notable Feb 3, 2024
Jangly, hooky post-punk from New Hampshire that strikes that key balance from its '80s forebears of romanticism and gloom. Bandcamp New & Notable Jul 6, 2021
